Man indicted for shooting at officers

DAYTON — Prosecuting Attorney Mat Heck, Jr. announced Thursday that Aaron Mitchell, 40, of Brookville, has been indicted for shooting at the Clay Township Police Department before leading police on a chase.

On the afternoon of Friday, November 30, Mitchell drove to the Clay Township Administrative Building on Arlington Road and fired 10 shots at the building. The building also serves as the Clay Township Police Department, and an officer was inside the building at the time of the shooting. The officer pointed his duty weapon at Mitchell and ordered him to put down his firearm. Instead, he drove away.

The Clay Township officer got into his marked cruiser and gave pursuit. Other officers were able to deploy “stop sticks” and disabled Mitchell’s vehicle on Diamond Mill Road. When the officers instructed him to show his hands, Mitchell pointed a rifle towards the officers. The officers fired shots at Mitchell, striking him three times. He was then detained and transported to the hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Thursday, the Montgomery County Grand Jury indicted Mitchell on:

• Two counts of Felonious Assault on a Police Officer

• One count of Discharge of a Firearm On or Near Prohibited Premises

• Two counts of Failure to Comply with the Order or Signal of a Police Officer

The counts of felonious assault and discharge of a firearm on or near prohibited premises include firearm specifications.

Mitchell is currently in custody, being held on a $150,000 bond. He will be arraigned on Tuesday, December 18 at 8:30 a.m.
