PORTAGE, MICH. — The High School Science Olympiad Team traveled to Portage, Michigan on Saturday, Dec. 8 for its first competition of the new season.
The team earned a High School Team Personal Best for a December competition. The high school team doesn’t get a good start on preparing for the season until Marching Band season ends, due to numerous band members on the Science Olympiad team.
The high school has two teams this year, consisting of ten seniors: Triston Harlin, Hailee Seagraves, SusieLee Horton, Kendall Wilson-Long, Ian Underburger, Brianna Gilson, Michael VanLuvender, Darryl Kinsler, Shaun Spivey, and Gabriel Rodriguez Padilla. It also has juniors: Ramya Thomas and Jenna Elam, sophomores Zach Bousquette, Dalton Harlin, Mason Flora, Kenneth Vallie, Trent Kelsey, Macey MacConnell, and freshman Rosemary Schmalhofer.
In Portage, Medal Winners included: 1st Place for Ian Underburger and Hailee Seagraves in Boomilever, 1st Place for Triston Harlin and Darryl Kinsler in Mousetrap Vehicle, and 3rd Place for Triston Harlin and Gabriel Rodriguez Padilla in Thermodynamics. Ribbon Winners included: 5th Place for Kenneth Vallie and Mason Flora in Sounds of Music, and 6th Place for Zach Bousquette and Dalton Harlin in Mission Possible. There were 30 teams at the Michigan competition.
The next competition is at Northmont as the teams host an Invitational on Saturday, January 5.
