Crash involving officer under investigation

CLAYTON — The Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) is continuing its investigation into a crash involving a Clayton police officer and a motorcycle that took place June 13 around 7:50 p.m. on State Route 49 near the Hoke Road intersection.

According to the OSH, the officer was pulling out of the Shell gas station and his cruiser was struck on the driver’s side by the motorcyclist. The motorcycle caught fire after the collision.

Officer Mark Gau, 47, a 13-year member of the department, and the motorcyclist, Jimmy Payne, Jr.., 51, of Dayton, were both transported to Miami Valley Hospital for treatment. Gau was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the crash investigation.

No charges have been filed.

“The City of Clayton is understandably concerned about the motor vehicle accident in which a Clayton Police officer was recently involved,” said City Law Director Martina Dillon. “The Ohio State Highway Patrol is in the process of investigating the accident and the city will continue to cooperate with that investigation. Since the matter is under investigation, any further comment must be deferred at this time. We feel the current focus should be on the injured motorcyclist and his recovery.”
