DAYTON — Englewood’s Teri Hunley was bright-eyed and all smiles Friday morning, April 15, even though she had come straight to the Dayton Community Blood Center to donate after working her overnight shift at the Englewood Walmart. She enjoys helping save lives, and on this visit she had the extra bonus of a bright new blanket.

Teri is the winner of the drawing for the “UD Flyer Afghan” in University of Dayton colors, hand-crafted by donor Fran Duell to celebrate her beloved Flyers as they competed in the NCAA “March Madness” basketball tournament. The Flyers made an early exit this year, but the custom-made afghan didn’t lose any luster.

“I just liked the blanket!” said Teri, who admits she is not a big basketball fan. It was easy to imagine how she could put it to use. “Laying around and relaxing!” she said.

The Flyer-designed blanket is one of many afghans Fran traditionally creates for CBC to use as a prize for donor raffles. Anyone who registered to donate at the Dayton Donor Center during the NCAA tournament could enter the drawing.

Fran is a class of ’66 UD graduate, and she remains loyal to the original red and light blue UD colors instead of the darker blue used today. New this year, she added a sparkling, silver-threaded yarn.

“For someone to be able to do this is pretty neat,” said Teri. “She is very talented.”

Like Fran, Teri is a dedicated “Donor for Life.” She began donating whole blood in 2000 and was encouraged to become an apheresis donor because she is an AB blood type “universal donor” for plasma. She now donates platelets.

She received her “Donor for Life – 100 LTD” jacket when she reached her 100th lifetime donation in 2015. She made her 114th lifetime donation Friday, and went home to finally get some rest with her new UD Flyer Afghan.
