CLAYTON — Salem Church of God’s celebration of Christmas will include numerous special events and a new teaching series, all beginning in early December and culminating with a special worship service on Christmas morning.
* The celebration kicks off with the third annual “Jingle Jam,” with performances at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3. Billed as “the craziest Christmas show in town,” “Jingle Jam” will include comedy, singing, the sharing of the Christmas story, a fun photo booth and a great time for all ages. Seating begins 30 minutes prior to each show, and families are encouraged to sit together, as childcare will not be available.
“A Salem Christmas” follows the next weekend, with presentations at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10 as well as 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 11. The 75-minute program will feature the Salem choir, orchestra and soloists in addition to congregational singing, visual artistry, interpretive dance and multimedia. Childcare will be available for those 2 years old and younger.
* Identical Christmas Eve services are planned for 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 23 and 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 24. The special evenings will include the Salem choir and orchestra as well as congregational singing and the lighting of candles. Childcare will be available for those 2 years old and younger.
* Then, on Christmas, there will be a single worship service at 11 a.m., as Salem celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. No childcare or other programming will be offered that morning, and children are welcome to attend in their pajamas.
Meanwhile, Lead Pastor Steve Southards’ teaching series through December, “The Thrill of Hope,” will include the messages “The Weary World Rejoices” (Dec. 4); “Fall On Your Knees” (Dec. 11); “The Soul Felt Its Worth” (Dec. 18); “Til He Appeared” (Dec. 23/24); and “A New and Glorious Morn” (Dec. 25).
“In a world of suffering, political confusion and frustration, poverty, brokenness and violence, what is your hope?,” Southards asked. “In this series, we are going to use the lyrics of the classic carol ‘O, Holy Night’ to focus on the ‘thrill of hope that caused a weary world to rejoice’ that very first holy night … and Jesus can do the same today.”
Sunday worship is at 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m., with the single service on Christmas.
As it did a year ago, Salem will present a “$1 Joy to Your World Invite Challenge” during the December events. For every guest who attends during the month, Salem will donate $1 to ministry partners in South Dakota, Germany, Italy and Guatemala. Guests can fill out a challenge card at events they attend.
