UNION — The City of Union held its annual tree lighting ceremony on Sunday at 6 p.m. at the corner of Montgomery Street and Martindale Road at the fire station.
Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived at the station on a fire truck and Santa met with hundreds of children who attended the event with their parents.
The City of Union Park Board and Union Fire and Rescue Department, sponsors of the event, provided free hot chocolate prepared again this year by City Manager John Applegate. Cookies were also provided for everyone to enjoy.
The event attracted another huge crowd this year with residents and their children filling the fire station and lined up outside on the sidewalk to await their turn to visit with Santa.
Prior to the festivities the city’s Christmas tree was illuminated across the street from the fire station. The tree was planted more than 20 years ago after being purchased at Brown’s Nursery in Phillipsburg and now stands over 40 feet tall.
