ENGLEWOOD — The Northmont Rotary recently heard from Tonya Folks about human trafficking in the Miami Valley.
Folks, the Human Trafficking Liaison for the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, spoke about how this problem is epidemic and includes the Miami Valley. It affects all socioeconomic groups, urban, suburban, and rural areas. She reviewed both human trafficking for labor as well as for sexual exploitation but focused on how parents and other adults can help to protect kids from becoming victims.
Youth are often targeted and recruited at age 12-14 (or even as young as 11 years old) so it is never too early to be alert for warning signs as well as to talk with ¬kids about safety and social media protection. She provides education and advocacy in her role with the Sheriff’s Department and can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org or tips and victim services can be obtained by contacting the Miami Valley Human Trafficking Hotline at (937) 866-1111.
The Northmont Rotary Club meets at noon each Tuesday at Good Samaritan North Health Center, 9000 N. Main St., Englewood.
