CLAYTON — Fairmont got double digit scoring from four players Tuesday and pulled away in the fourth quarter to post a 69-62 victory over Northmont.
Senior guard Ryan Hall led Fairmont with 21 points followed by senior Kellan Bochenek with 16, junior Andre O’Daniel with 16 and senior center Dashawn Brown with 10.
“Hall and Bochenek are both four-year varsity players and to me, Fairmont has the two best guard combo in the Dayton area,” said Northmont Coach Shane Kincer. “They are both very physical and they are matchup problems. We did a great job in the first half holding Hall to six but in the second half he came out and got 15. He got some open shots in the second half. It was tale of two halves. Bochenek had a great first half and in the second half Hall had a great half. We just couldn’t contain both of them for the course of the game.”
Tied 20-20 after the first quarter the Firebirds took a one point lead at halftime and a 49-42 entering the fourth quarter.
During the final period Northmont’s inexperience proved to be its undoing.
The Thunderbolts cut Fairmont’s lead to 51-48 on a basket by Prophet Johnson. Andre O’Daniel sank a free throw and on the change of possession came up with a steal and a basket for Fairmont. After Northmont missed shots on back-to-back possessions Ryan Hall scored a dunk and followed with another basket to boost the Firebirds’ lead to 65-51 to effectively put the game out of reach.
Northmont came up with a few steals or a rebound after a missed Fairmont shot and would storm down the floor only to make a hurried pass to turn the ball back over to Fairmont.
“We were just talking about that in the locker room. I couldn’t tell you how many times we turned them over and then didn’t even get a shot off at the other end of the floor,” Kincer added. “That is the area of the game that we have to drastically improve on if we are going to be successful as the season progresses.”
Sophomore duo Patrick Ivory paced Northmont with 18 points and Prophet Johnson had 14 while senior Danny Lewis tossed in 10.
