CLAYTON — Northmont utilized its home course advantage to post a 170 to 183 victory Thursday over Wayne at Meadowbrook of Clayton. With the victory the Thunderbolts improved to 1-1 in division play and 1-2 overall. Wayne fell to 0-2 in the Central Division and 0-3 overall.
The Warriors appeared to struggle with the tree lined front nine while Thunderbolt players used their course knowledge to avoid trouble.
Coach Nathan Hannahan felt his team played some its best golf of the season.
“The pace was set tonight by our first group out on the course,” Hannahan said. “Freshman Alec Avdakov proved that he is making the most of his continued varsity experience by posting his best nine hole total to date (44). Senior Luke Knapke found the form that has made him a key contributor for the varsity golf team by posting a round of 43.”
Senior Landon Hill posted a respectable score of 45 in his second varsity start of the season. Sophomore Drew Johnson salvaged a round of 50 by chipping in on the par 5 seventh hole.
That set the stage for Northmont’s final group on the course.
“We needed solid play from our veteran leaders playing in the last group to secure a team victory tonight,” Hannahan said.
Senior Shawn Richards fought back from a double bogie and a bogie on the first two holes to post a pair of birdies on his way to the clubhouse. Richards’ round of 43 was good for Northmont’s third team score of the match. When senior Wesley Kincaid, playing alongside Richards, calmly rolled in his final putt on the 9th green for a four-over-par round of 40, the Thunderbolts claimed the victory.
Monday the Thunderbolts will face Chaminade-Julienne and Troy at Miami Valley Golf Club. Tee time for that match is scheduled for 3:45 p.m.
