TROY — Northmont was victorious October 1 at Troy Country Club against Troy and Tippecanoe tying Troy with a score of 158 while Tipp shot 165.
The Northmont victory was determined by a 5th score tiebreaker. Wesley Kincaid’s round of 43 was good enough to beat the 47 posted by Troy’s fifth man.
The match was contested on the front nine of Troy Country Club in some of the worst weather conditions of the season. The wind gusts were upwards of 20 mph and the temperature fell several degrees during the course of the match.
“We needed all hands on deck to post what was our best team performance of the season,” said Northmont Coach Nathan Hannahan. “Senior Ben Sage torched the front nine needing only 12 putts in a two over par personal and season best total of 36. Senior Shawn Richards had a good round as well posting a score of 40 despite doubling the tough par 3 ninth hole. Senior Landon Hill returned to form with a smooth round of 41.”
Sophomore Drew Johnson was able to match bogeys and pars on the way to a 41 of his own.
“The score we counted on the most was the 43 posted by senior Wesley Kincaid,” Hannahan added.
“He fought back from a triple bogey early in his round and maintained his composure all the way to the clubhouse. Senior Luke Knapke had a tough time from tee to green en route to a score of 50.”
Tippecanoe was in the hunt all match long eventually posting a team total of 165.
“Tonight’s performance proved that every stroke from every player matters,” Hannahan said. “We put in a lot of hard work on the practice green this week and those many chip shots we hit in preparation proved to be the difference in the match tonight. I am beyond proud of the poise and selflessness displayed by the players on the Northmont golf team. All five Bolts who had already turned in their scorecards were anxiously awaiting and silently cheering for Senior Shawn Richards playing in the final foursome on the course. We have a fine group of young men who represent our school and community with dignity and respect one stroke at a time.”
Hannahan went on to say that the double win puts to rest some of the doubts caused by near misses in head to head competition this season.
The Thunderbolts will compete in the sectional tournament at Beavercreek Golf Club on Wednesday, October 7.
