CLAYTON – Denissa Sly scored six points in overtime and Erin Mangen buried her third 3-pointer of the night to help lead the Northmont girls basketball team to a 46-38 victory Saturday over Troy.
Sly finished with 14 points while Mangen tallied 9 points as Northmont improved to 4-3 overall while Troy fell to 2-5.
“It was a good match. I think we hit our shots when we needed to get the shots to get the win,” said Northmont Coach Bethany Kincer. “Defense pulled out the win for us. We struggled a little bit at the free throw line at the beginning of the game, but we hit them when it counted. It was a good, tough battle especially after being down 11-2 after the first quarter. I’m really proud of the girls.”
Northmont converted seven of 11 shots from the foul line in overtime with Sly hitting six of seven from the charity stripe.
Anotnette Dorsey accounted for Northmont’s only basket in the first quarter as Troy stormed out to an 11-2 advantage. The Lady Bolts offense came to life in the second quarter to cut Troy’s lead to 19-16 at halftime. Northmont held Troy just one point in the third quarter to take a 22-20 lead into the fourth period.
Regulation play ended in a 36-36 deadlock setting up the overtime heroics by Sly and Erin Mangen while defensively the Lady Bolts defense limited Troy to one basket.
Northmont plays at Beavercreek on Monday, at Piqua on Thursday, and then returns home to host Fairmont on Saturday at 1 p.m.
