CLAYTON — Eight Northmont players scored Wednesday night as the Lady Bolts romped to a 54-13 victory over Springfield in a Greater Western Ohio Conference Central Division contest.
With the victory Northmont improved to 7-8 overall and 2-3 in division play while Springfield fell to 3-13 and 0-5.
Senior forward Alexia Payne came off the bench to score 14 points and junior Erin Mangen had 11 to pace the Lady Bolts attack. T’erra Eubanks led Springfield with seven points.
Makayla DeArmond buried a 3-pointer to give the Lady Cats an early 3-0 lead. Erin Mangen countered with a basket for Northmont and Anna Mangen sank a pair of free throws and the Lady Bolts never looked back. Northmont led 11-4 at the end of the first quarter and 26-6 at halftime.
The Lady Bolts came up with seven steals and the defense totally disrupted Springfield’s offense.
“Our defense really stepped up tonight. We’ve really been pushing them at practice telling them that we need to work harder and play with some heart,” said Northmont Coach Bethany Kincer. “If we work hard and play with heart the defense will come. We have been pushing them hard trying to get our intensity up and it paid off tonight. We have been stressing to our seniors that they need to step up and start leading and two of them stepped up tonight to score. It was nice to see scoring all around our lineup and not just from one person.”
Freshman Shalaya Heath led the Lady Bolts with six rebounds while junior Ryanne Stoffel and sophomore Anna Mangen had five each.
The victory ended a four game skid and was Northmont’s first since a 41-40 win over Fairmont on December 19. The Lady Bolts will play Fairmont this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Kettering’s Trent Arena.
