CENTERVILLE — The Northmont boys golf team wrapped up its season at the Division I sectional tournament Monday at Yankee Trace.
The tough field saw Northmont finish seventh overall out of 13 teams with score of 365. Only the top four teams and top four individual low scores from non-placing teams advance to district play. The Thunderbolts fought hard but no member of the team managed to advance.
Butler finished in first place with a team score of 298 followed by Centerville at 300, Springbor0o 304 and Fairmont 305. Individual qualifiers included Tyler Goecke of Carroll with a round of 78, Christian Bugher of Lebanon also with 78, Dylan Whitson of Lebanon with a 79 and Kyle Fox of Miamisburg with an 80.
The tournament was contested on the Heritage and Legends courses.
“The weather conditions were perfect, and the course was in ideal shape for low scores,” noted Northmont Coach Nathan Hannahan.
Leading the way for the Thunderbolts was sophomore Alec Avdakov with a round of 87 after going out in 41 on the Legends side. Avdakov finished just seven strokes away from a playoff to make it to the District Tournament as an individual.
Sophomore Noah Thayer shot 46 on the Legends and a 43 on the Heritage to post an 89. Junior Cole Stephens shot 51 on Legends and coasted to a 42 on the Heritage to post 93 overall. Freshman Gavin Caras posted a 50 and finished with a 46 on the Heritage side to post 96 overall. Sophomore David Richards posted a score of 100.
“The varsity boys golf team exceeded expectations all season long,” Hannahan said. “It is bittersweet that our season has come to an end, but the future is bright. Our squad was composed of one junior, four sophomores, and one freshman. With four freshmen and a sophomore on our JV squad, we look to continue to grow together as a team as we look forward to the 2017 campaign. Hats off to a great season men!”
