CLAYTON — Northmont had no trouble scoring a victory over West Carrollton in the opening round of the boys Division I sectional tournament.
Senior Collin Hobert led the Thunderbolts with a pair of goals to help power Northmont to a 6-0 win.
Junior Noah Teague netted the first goal of the evening with 31:29 left in the first half. Sophomore Brandon Morton made it 2-0 at 20:47. Hobert boosted the lead to 4-0 with back-to-back goals less than a minute apart. Hobert scored at 7:58 and again with 7:14 remaining in the half.
With 1:15 left senior foreign exchange student Haakon Kvamme gave the Thunderbolts a 5-0 lead at the break.
Senior Chase Griesheimer capped the victory with a goal at 18:14 of the second half.
“We will take it, that’s for sure,” said Northmont Coach Bob Brown about his team’s sectional win.
With the victory Northmont improved to 7-8-2 while the Pirates end their season at 2-13-1. It was a match the Thunderbolts were expected to win.
“No matter who is there you have to show up and do your job, so we will take the 6-0 win. No one got hurt and now we move on to the next round,” Brown said. “When you are expected to win the hardest thing is to play how you should play. We went into spots where we played down to how they played and that’s an easy trap to fall into. The next game won’t be like that so we will have to figure it out the next two days and pick it up.”
The Thunderbolts will play the winner of the Greenville vs Miamisburg match at Northmont Thursday at 7 p.m.
