CLAYTON — Volleyball tryouts began Tuesday at Northmont High School for varsity, junior varsity, freshmen and middle school teams.
Middle School tryouts were held from 9 to 11 a.m. while High School tryouts were held from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.
A total of 33 players showed up to try out for the high school teams Tuesday, the most Northmont Coach Steve J. Smith has ever seen. He began coaching at Northmont Middle School in 2003 until 2006 and took over as the Northmont high School boys volleyball coach in 2006, a position he still holds. He began coaching the Northmont girls volleyball team in 2015. His coaching career began in 1997 when he served as the 8th grade girls coach at Middletown Christian Schools.
“Usually it has been in lower twenties,” Smith said.
The varsity team will carry between nine and 12 players, according to Smith.
“Volleyball doesn’t have as much substituting as basketball, a sport where they are constantly running up and down the court, so you sub more players in and out,” Smith noted. “In volleyball you don’t need to sub as often.”
Smith wasn’t sure if any cuts would be made since rosters have to be filled for the freshmen, junior varsity and varsity teams. There were 14 freshmen attending the tryouts on Tuesday.
“The freshmen group is a pretty athletic class,” Smith noted. “We don’t have a lot of size in the upper classes, but the freshmen have lot of size.”
There were six seniors, four juniors and nine sophomores attending the tryouts.
The Northmont Varsity Volleyball Team will travel to Sidney Lehman Catholic for a scrimmage on Tuesday, August 8 at 5 p.m. and Thursday, August 10 travel to Eaton for its second scrimmage, also at 5 p.m. Northmont will host Valley View on Thursday, August 17 at 4 p.m. for a final scrimmage and then travels to Tippecanoe on Saturday, August 19 at 11 a.m. for its first match of the regular season.
