MASON — On Saturday, the Northmont Academic Challenge team won the inaugural Mason Invitational at Mason High School against some of the best teams in southwest Ohio.
After a tough day of competition, Northmont defeated Walnut Hills in the semifinals 500-300 before defeating league rival Beavercreek 415-245 to win the tournament championship.
This marks Northmont’s sixth tournament championship of the season. Three Northmont players finished among the top seven individual scorers in the tournament out of 54 players. Senior Brendon Jenkins was the 3rd highest scorer, while junior Kara Combs was 6th and senior Rachel Tracy was 7th.
Last week, Northmont posted wins over Beavercreek (84-64), Troy (86-53) and Fairborn (96-32) in Greater Western Ohio Conference events, extending the team’s conference winning streak to 123 games. The team has not lost a league contest since the 2008-2009 season. The team can clinch its 8th consecutive GWOC Central title with a win over Centerville on Tuesday night.
The team will travel to Akron this weekend to compete in the 88 team Copley Invitational and has accepted an invitation to compete at the Hunter College tournament in New York City over spring break.
