GROVE CITY — On March 11 and 12, Northmont Senior High School’s Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) traveled to Grove City to compete at Central Crossing High School for the Area 3 East Regional Championship title.
Area 3 East is composed of a four state region (Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and West Virginia). The winner of this regional drill meet, a two day event involving academics, athletics, inspection and five marching events earns the right to represent the area in the NJROTC Nationals Academic, Athletic and Drill Championship on April 1 and 2 at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida. The Area 3 East meet was tightly contested among Northmont, Hamilton, Central Crossing and Floyd Central high schools but, when the competition ended, Northmont won the meet for the 11th time in the last 13 years.
The Thunderbolts won trophies for the following team events: academics, commanded by cadets Kiani Hayes and Mark Wood, second place; athletics, commanded by cadet Alex Sharp, first place; inspection, commanded by cadet John Garrison, second place; Color Guard, commanded by cadet John Garrison, fourth place; unarmed IDR, commanded by cadet Gracie Fink, first place; armed IDR, commanded by cadet Joe Taylor, fourth place; armed exhibition, commanded by cadet Alex Sharp, third place; and unarmed exhibition, commanded by cadet Dee’Shawn McClean, first place.
In individual events, the T-Bolts took home medals for the following. Female Pushups: Denissa Sly, first and Aniyah Stanford and MacKenzie Christopher, third and fourth, and Olivia Jones, tenth. Male Pushups: Alex Sharp, Neil Arsenio, Kameron Brown and Jordan Gales, third, fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively. Female Curlups: Taylor Evans, Hailey Burns and Aniyah Stanford, first, third and fourth, respectively. Male Curlups: Alex Sharp, Collin McCluer and Jordan Gales, third, fourth and eighth, respectively. Academics: Mark Wood, first place.
The highlight of the drill meet is the knockout events where approximately 400 cadets lined up in a large military formation, and executed stationary drills for individual precision, with judges “knocking them out” for failure to execute the movement precisely, until the last man or woman is standing. Northmont’s Olivia Jones, Anthony Riley, Dustin Kallmeyer and Dion Wilkins placed second, fifth, sixth and ninth, respectively, in the armed event while Denissa Sly placed first in the unarmed event.
In addition to Northmont, the following schools competed in the Area Three East drill meet: Belmont High School (Dayton, OH), Bloomfield High School (Bloomfield, IN), Central Crossing High School (Grove City, OH), Euclid High School (Euclid, OH), Floyd Central High School (Floyd Knobs, IN), Franklin Heights High School (Columbus, OH), Greenville High School (Greenville, OH), Grove City High School (Grove City, OH), Hamilton High School (Hamilton, OH), Highland High School (Marengo, OH), New Albany High School (New Albany, IN), Northwestern High School (Flint, MI), Parkersburg High School (Parkersburg, WV), Pike High School (Indianapolis, IN), Princeton High School (Sharonville, OH), Rhodes High School (Cleveland, OH), Scarlet Oaks Career Campus (Cincinnati, OH) and Washington High School (Washington, IN).
