COLUMBUS — During the Ohio Newspaper Association’s annual Osman C. Hooper Newspaper Awards ceremony in February the Englewood Independent earned the ‘Newspaper of the Year’ award in Division C.
Englewood Independent page designer Kirsta Simmons won 1st Place for design. The judge commented, “Good use of spacing, lines and typography make for a very organized and clear design and for a good read.”
Editor Ron Nunnari won 3rd Place for Sports Coverage. The judge noted, “Good, clean design and writing. Good use of large photos.”
Best Local Feature – Ron Nunnari, 3rd Place for a story about Englewood resident Jack Sulfridge who rescued his neighbor’s dogs from a house fire. “There’s drama here that’s fairly easy to do right – just get out of the way of the story,” the judge said. “But it’s the surprising back story of the hero that frames this narrative and makes it special. Kudos to the reporter who dug a little deeper than the surface.”
In-Depth reporting – Ron Nunnari, 3rd Place. “Interesting enterprise piece,” the judge noted.
News Coverage – Ron Nunnari, 3rd Place. “Good mixture of news that would matter to the community,” the judge commented.
Best News Photo – Ron Nunnari, 3rd Place for a photo that appeared in the Vandalia Drummer News. “Very unique photo. Good camera angle, color and balance. Photo draws reader into the story. Captures the emotion of the situation,” the judge stated.
