VANDALIA — On Tuesday, March 15, the Northmont Academic Challenge team concluded the GWOC regular season at Vandalia-Butler by scoring a close 89-88 win over Sidney to extend Northmont’s conference winning streak to 134 consecutive games dating back to 2008.
The T-Bolts had already locked up their 8th consecutive Central Division title after beating Centerville 100-64 two weeks prior, but would have to put their 133 game conference winning streak on the line against Sidney, a team currently ranked No. 2 in the state of Ohio. The T-Bolts began the night by knocking off Greenville (101-22) and Piqua (95-38), setting the stage for a battle with similarly undefeated Sidney.
After battling through the initial portion of the match, Northmont held a slim 29-28 lead. Both teams would score a perfect “20” on the alphabet round portion of the match, meaning that Northmont led 69-68, with 20 two-point tossup questions remaining.
Sidney jumped out to an early lead in the final round, and led 88-83 with three questions to play. Northmont would need to answer the final three questions of the match to win, which is exactly what seniors Brendon Jenkins and Rachel Tracy did, giving Northmont a slim 89-88 win and stunning the heavily favored Sidney team.
Seniors Brendon Jenkins and Rachel Tracy were named 1st team All-Conference, junior captain Kara Combs was named 2nd team All-Conference, while junior Betina Dobles was conference Honorable Mention. Through the 17 game GWOC season, the Northmont varsity and JV teams included the following students: Seniors Andrew Correll, Brendon Jenkins, Clara Leedy, and Rachel Tracy; Juniors Kara Combs, Sarah Morgan, Paige Waterman, Betina Dobles, Anna Fox, Taylor Hamilton, Kylee Collins and Molly Buchanan; Sophomore Ryan Laing; Freshman Ryan Walker; and 8th grader Drew Rasor.
The team will travel to New York City over spring break to compete in the Hunter College Invitational before defending their NAQT State Championship in Columbus on April 9th. Following the state tournament, Northmont has been invited to three national championship tournaments: National History Bowl National Championship (April 23-24, Washington DC), NAQT National Championship (May 28-29, Dallas, TX) and PACE National Championship (June 4-5, Chicago, IL).
