MIAMISBURG — Northmont snapped a three game losing streak Wednesday by posting its first division victory of the season 66-45 against Miamisburg.
The Lady Bolts lost division games 74-60 to Lebanon and 60-39 to Springboro and then suffered a rout to Bellbrook 62-29 on Monday before picking up their second victory of the season at Miamisburg.
Makayla Cooper scored 13 second half points to lead Northmont with 18 while Erin Mangen scored 14 of her 16 points in the second half as the Lady Bolts put the game away. Shalaya Heath carried Northmont with 15 points in the first half and finished with 17.
Heath scored seven of Northmont’s 13 first quarter points with Miamisburg holding a one point lead entering the second period. Heath scored eight in the second quarter, Anna Mangen tallied six and Cooper had three to help the Lady Bolts take a 30-25 lead at halftime.
Northmont doubled its lead to 46-36 entering the fourth quarter and put the game away in the final period with Erin Mangen scoring nine points including a trey.
With the victory Northmont improves to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in division play. Miamisburg falls to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in division play.
“We’ve kind of been harping on our kids to get the ball inside to get some post touches and tonight we got it inside, and when we didn’t get it inside to our post players we looked to drive and attack inside, and as a result we scored 50 points in the paint,” said Northmont Coach Bethany Kincer. “Defensively we picked up the pressure and tried to force them to turn it over. We did a good job pressuring them and forcing some turnovers and scoring off those turnovers.”
Offensively the Lady Bolts were patient and worked the ball around the perimeter before dishing off to an open player for a penetration score, a factor that Kincer took note of.
“We definitely played more as a team tonight than we have the last couple of games,” Kincer added. “We looked for each other and each other’s strengths and it definitely helped us out.”
Emily Kepple led Miamisburg with 18; Sha’mya Leigh had 11 and Aliyah Burks 10 to power the Lady Vikings’ attack.
Northmont will host Thurgood Marshall on Monday and Springfield on Wednesday.
