MIAMISBURG — Northmont capped a perfect season in division play Friday with 71-54 victory over Miamisburg to win all six games against National West opponents. The Thunderbolts improved to 18-4 overall and 9-2 in conference play while the Vikings fell to 10-11 and 2-8.
Christian Wilson led Northmont with 20 points and scored the first six points of the game to power a 6-0 run. Wilson ended the first quarter with 13 points.
Northmont held an eight point lead after the first period and extended its lead to 12 points before getting a little sloppy. Powered by seven second quarter points from Lathan Hartman the Vikings rallied to close the gap to 28-25 midway through the quarter.
The Thunderbolts regrouped with Rodney Richardson coming up with a few steals and a pair of buckets and free throws by Jabari Perkins and Vinson Walker to open up a 38-27 halftime lead.
Northmont led by as many as 13 in the third quarter but the Vikings entered the final eight minutes of play trialing by 10.
Richardson came up with three more steals in the fourth quarter and Vinson Walker scored nine points to help Northmont pull away. The Thunderbolts speed and defense were just too much for Miamisburg to contend with.
“All in all it was a very good night. We created a lot of turnovers and I thought our shot selection was really good and we shared the ball well and played hard,” said Northmont Coach Collin Abels. “I thought there was a stretch in the first half where we turned the ball over a few too many times and stretch in the second half where we did the same thing. We just have to clean those things up because when you go into the postseason every possession gets magnified and you just have to make sure that you stay solid as long as you can and not get give teams any momentumal runs.”
Northmont will get a first round bye in the sectional tournament and will most likely face Butler in the second round, a team that has won eight of its last ten games. The Aviators face Stebbins in the first round of sectional play on Saturday, February 25. Northmont will play the winner of the Butler vs Stebbins game on Wednesday, March 1 at 6 p.m. at Centerville High School.
“We came out of both of those situations when we turned the ball over too much and locked in and executed,” Abels added. “Even when it got down under double figures we were able to lock in and push the score back up to double figures. The biggest thing is we are 18-4, undisputed division champs, and undefeated in the division. We are going to celebrate for a few days what we have done here in the regular season, and then on Tuesday we will start on mission number two.”
