ENGLEWOOD — The family of former Englewood Police Officer Bill Davenport will host the 4th annual Community Blood Center (CBC) Bill Davenport Memorial Blood Drive Thursday, July 30 from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Englewood Government Center community room. Donors are encouraged to schedule an appointment at www.donortime.com, sponsor code 1373.
The goal of the Davenport family is to honor his memory by encouraging blood donations, especially for the treatment of cancer patients, and to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). The blood drive traditionally receives strong support from public safety officers in and around the Englewood area.
Bill served the Englewood community for nearly 38 years in law enforcement. He retired as a sergeant in 1997 but continued to work as a reserve office until 2008. He died Jan. 16, 2011 after a 10-year battle with cancer.
“During his 10-year battle, blood and platelets were needed on a regular basis,” said Bill’s son Brett Davenport, coordinator of the blood drive. “He received numerous blood products that helped extend his life. There were many hard times during those 10 years, but the availability to get blood when needed was not one of them. This was due in large part because of the selfless support of blood donors.”
Everyone who registers to donate will receive a free “Catch the Wave – Donate Blood” screw top water bottle with straw; everyone age 18 and older will also be entered in the CBC “Get on Board – Give Blood” summer blood drive drawing to win an all-expense-paid Hawaii vacation for two.
