CLAYTON — On Tuesday, April 11 the Wonder Workshop announced that a group of Salem Christian Academy students were one of 20 teams to win $810 in the Wonder League Robotics Competition.
The team, named ‘The Robot Squad,’ was composed of five third grade students: Jaylnn Denlinger, Maddie Fourman, Sloan Fugate, Ella Smith and Ben Speers.
The competition began in October 2016 with 5,300 teams from 52 countries. The Robot Squad had to complete five challenges and make a video to submit to Wonder League by the deadline of December 15, 2016. The students were one of 470 teams that completed the competition and received a perfect score giving them the title of first place in the state of Ohio.
In order to honor their achievement, the Wonder League decided to have a Perfect Score Round. For these teams, they offered a sixth and final mission, this time, with a twist. Wonder League asked them to submit their final solution for peer review — and in turn they would evaluate a team of peers as well. It was a great opportunity for teams to learn from one another, and also learn from the experience of evaluating others.
Salem Christian Academy had two other teams; ‘Overgame’ (Russell Dillak, Joel Harvey, Rylan Isaacs and Hunter Smith) and ‘The Midnight Riders’ (Christopher Rivers, Donnovan and Dayvon Coble) that also did well placing in the top 33 percent of the competition.
