CLAYTON — It’s never easy to play Centerville, consistently one of the top Division I teams in the area in boys soccer, especially with a lineup decimated by injuries.

That was the case Tuesday night when Northmont hosted the Elks. The Thunderbolts were without their leading scorer from last season, Brandon Morton, who hasn’t played a single minute this season but should return to action soon after undergoing a knee scope. To make matters worse Brandon Sluterbeck might have broken a fibula during the match with the Elks. Mat Eilerman pulled a hamstring.

Casey Miller put the Elks up 1-0 nine minutes and four seconds into the match. Tanner Greenlee boosted Centerville’s lead to 2-0 with 22:27 remaining in the first half and kept Northmont off the board the remainder of the night to post a 2-0 victory.

With the win the Elks improved to 3-0-1 overall while the Thunderbolts dropped to 1-2-1.

“They deserve to win. They executed their game plan better in the first half,” said Northmont Coach Bob Brown. “We just came out a little flat and just got behind. We had a game plan going in, we just didn’t do what we were supposed to do. We needed to erase their central midfield ahead of time, but we just didn’t do it and Centerville’s players just did a very good job of taking advantage of space and time. Our guys played much better in the second half with a little heart finally. Kudos to Centerville. They did what they had to do and the results are what it is.”

Saturday the Thunderbolts defeated Tippecanoe 3-0. Tanner Juskae scored two goals and Matt Eilerman had the other to power Northmont to its first victory of the season.

Thursday the Thunderbolts play at Sidney, their fifth match in the last nine days. After that Northmont plays at Newton on Tuesday, Sept. 5, hosts Wayne on Thursday, Sept. 7 and plays at Tecumseh on Saturday, Sept. 9.
